Thoughts

Ok so it’s now 16 weeks to go until I start my master’s degree!!

If you have been following my blog (thanks if you have by the way) you will know I have been chopping & changing my camera gear over the past 9 months or so. I just haven’t been able to settle on a system in part because I haven’t been able to settle on my photographic practice, well needs must and as I will be going back to university in 16 weeks (wahoo) I need to settle on a practice & system that suits it.

To that end I have decided to go back to a DSLR system as opposed to a mirrorless system.

·       I don’t need 4K video – If I plan to shoot any in 4K I can rent a camera + lens for that

·       I can do without IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) – I have a monopod and tripod & there are plenty of lenses with stabilisation built into them out there

·       I don’t need Eye AF or Face AF – when I shoot portraits’ I use a high f-stop (anywhere from f5.6 to f11) so what I want in focus is in focus

·       I tend not to shoot in low light that much so I don’t need lenses with big aperture’s

·       Lens availability – at the moment there are just so many more lenses out there for DSLR’s over mirrorless cameras & the used one’s are far cheaper

·       The used camera market – there are so many used DSLR’s in very good condition out there for far less cost than mirrorless

So, what am I thinking of switching to?

I am looking at Canon’s EOS 5DS/5DSR – I have previously owned both of these cameras and loved using them. I took a 5DSR with me to Australia 3 years ago a long with a 24-70mm F4 L lens and got some great shots. I think having such a high megapixel sensor (50MP), great durable camera body, ergonomics & lens options make for a very flexible platform. I’m looking at getting 3 lenses, a wide-angle lens for landscapes, a macro lens for macro photography (obviously) as well as portraits & a power zoom for general use as well as for long treks where I want to stay light.

So fingers crossed I’ll be ready to go in 16 weeks!
