Urban Banal

Urban Banal in an exploration of the banality of the rural urban landscape and its desolate conformity.

Many elements of the urban landscape are generic, housing is a typical example of this, what you might find in a town or city can as likely also be found in the countryside. There is also standardization, elements that are the same no matter where they are, post boxes, phoneline boxes, road signs are most likely to be the same anywhere.

But there are also elements that may not necessarily be different but are perhaps a contradiction, an example of this would be greening up the village centre when the village is surrounded by the countryside with fields and hills.

Much of the elements that are found in the rural urban landscape are so universal that you could perhaps be forgiven for thinking you were in a town or the leafy suburb of a city, it is this banality that is explored in this project.

I explore the “Urban Banal” through both colour and black & white photography, each highlighting different aspects of this “landscape”.
